Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal “Marketplace” section was like a who’s who of retailers getting their rears kicked for not having new ideas and being unable to get ahead of changes now and in the future for retailing.

Among the headlines were:

  • Big Retailers Find It Hard Shopping for a CEO (featuring JC Penney, American Eagle Outfitters, and Target)
  • Whole Foods Shares Drop on Flat Earnings
  • Office Depots Plans to Shut 400 Sores
  • Sear’s CEO Signals More Closings Likely

The CEO article that includes Target said the retailer is ready to move away from its 112-year track record of internal leadership to look beyond Target, and potentially the retail industry, for its next leader.

Why the change in strategy?

Target needs “fresh eyes” to create dramatic change, rapidly test more new ideas, and get “pilots” and “experiments” into its retail stores with greater speed.

Fresh eyes, more new ideas, and experimenting with greater speed?

Sounds like an organization trying to figure out how it is going to start Taking the NO Out of InNOvation!

#BZBowl Is Moving to #SBExp for Super Bowl XLVI

With the Super Bowl this Sunday, I’ve been getting questions about #BZBowl, the Twitter chat The Brainzooming Group hosted the last two years to critique Super Bowl ads, the game, the Super Bowl hoopla, and all the popular culture surrounding the Super Bowl.

Here’s the #BZBowl update for Super Bowl XLVI.

During last year’s #BZBowl, author and good friend Jim Joseph participated during the game from New Orleans, shared his perspectives in a post-Super Bowl blog post, and was a guest along with Nate Riggs, Chris Reaburn, Alex Greenwood, and Barrett Sydnor during a special #BZBowl edition of Kelly Scanlon’s radio show I hosted. Since last year’s Super Bowl, Jim has hosted live Twitter chats for a variety of events, including The Grammys, Oscars, Oprah’s last show, and most recently, The Golden Globes.

This year, The Brainzooming Group is shifting its strategy and focus for the Super Bowl. As a result, we’re putting our #BZBowl energy behind Jim Joseph and his #SBExp Twitter chat event this Sunday. With Jim’s new book “The Experience Effect For Small Business: Big Brand Results with Small Business Resources” coming out this week, he’s getting a lot of well-deserved attention, and it just makes sense for us to play a supporting role for Super Bowl XLVI.

Watch for more details later in the week, but expect #SBExp to deliver the same Super Bowlicious smart, insightful, snarky, and intimate (i.e., spammer-free) Twitter chat you’ve come to experience with #BZBowl.

Why Creativity? from Aspindle“Why Creativity?” – New Aspindle eBook with David Meerman Scott, Julien Smith (and me)

Tanner Christensen, founder of Aspindle, a resource and incubator of creative ideas and former guest blogger on Brainzooming, has published a new eBook called, “Why Creativity?” with brief essays by “Trust Agents” co-author Julien Smith, “World Wide Rave” author David Meerman Scott, and Patrick Algrim, Matthew E May, Gregg Fraley, and Frank Chimero.

I’m honored to have an article included as well, talking about my lifelong fascination with creativity, even when I don’t have the chops to pull off the creativity I might like. You can download “Why Creativity?” for free, without even having to supply any info at Tanner’s Aspindle website.  – Mike Brown

In the spirit of broad Kansas City community efforts to brainstorm ideas for how the introduction of Google Fiber can change lives in Kansas City, The Brainzooming Group was excited to partner with Social Media Club of Kansas City to create “Building the Gigabit City: Brainzooming a Google Fiber Roadmap.”

We conducted the large-scale brainstorming session on October 3 with a diverse cross-community group of nearly 90 people. The 120-page Google Fiber brainstorming report is available via free download on the Brainzooming website at brainzooming.com/googlefiberkc.

The Many Voices of Kansas City

As we compiled the Google Fiber brainstorming report, we wanted to share the voices of the many passionate Kansas Citians who participated in Building the Gigabit City. Rather than a typical strategic recap from The Brainzooming Group where we report results with a single written voice, we’ve worked hard to maintain the vibrancy, insights, aspirations, and cautions of everyone who shared their perspectives in the Google Fiber brainstorming effort.

Just as the input was crowdsourced, the results are as well as we’re making the report available for free to everyone in partnership with Social Media Club of Kansas City.

In this Google Fiber brainstorming report, you’ll get a sense of these voices from the community through the different structures and depths with which their concepts and ideas are reported. The voices will come through in the Personal Perspectives offered by a number of individuals involved in the session.

Finally, you’ll “hear” a range of voices in the ideas and concepts themselves. Rather than starting from scratch, Building the Gigabit City was designed to build upon work and thinking that’s already gone on in Kansas City about what Google Fiber could and should mean for the city. Beyond brainstorming on current thinking, there was a lot of new creative thinking about what the Gigabit City can be, too.

Google Fiber in Kansas City – The Building the Gigabit City Report

You can watch an archived livestream of the Building the Gigabit City release press conference at the SMCKC Gigabit City website in addition to downloading the free report.

We hope you’ll use the results to truly use your talents and resources to help realize the promise of the Gigabit City! – Mike Brown

The original “Taking the NO Out of InNOvation” presentation and innovation ebook were developed when Max Utsler asked me to speak to his class at The University of Kansas on innovation perspectives in marketing communications. In many ways, that innovation presentation in 2004 started me down the career path I’ve been on ever since.

I’m back tonight with Max Utsler’s class sharing the “Taking the No Out of Innovation” presentation along with a new social media project Brainzooming is helping Max and Barrett Sydnor implement for their  fall semester classes at The University of Kansas. Dubbed “Blogapalooza” by Max, the social media project will introduce students to blogging and creating social media content in front of multiple audiences . . . but more on Blogapalooza later.

To make “Taking the NO Out of InNOvation” presentation content more accessible from among the 1,000-plus posts on the Brainzooming blog, here are the 8 innovation perspectives contained in the presentation and links to supporting content reaching back to the earliest Brainzooming posts.

Introspective

Create a stronger innovation perspective by understanding your distinctive talents.

Diverse

Surround yourself with a creative team that complements your distinctive talents.

Forgetful

Strike the right balance between using and turning off your expertise to boost creative thinking.

Borrower

Borrow from any inputs you can to trigger creative ideas that you twist and shape to be your own.

Open to Possibilities

Hone your openness to what may today seem impossible or preposterous – that’s where you’ll find tomorrow’s innovation.

Inquisitive

Collect great questions that yield creative ideas and use them all the time.

A Creator

You have to do something with ideas. Selecting the best ones and moving forward with them is central to innovation.

Persistent

Innovation doesn’t necessarily come easy. When it comes to the “No” voices you’ll hear, be ready to dodge, morph, ignore, or otherwise blow them up. That takes persistence.
